Florida’s Two Leading Law Enforcement Groups Announce Opposition to Legalizing Recreational Marijuana

Florida Sheriffs Association & Police Chiefs Association Hammer Flaws in Amendment 3

Tallahassee, Fla. – The Vote No on 3 Campaign today highlighted the announcement from Florida’s two top law enforcement associations declaring their opposition to the legalization of recreational marijuana and exposing the flaws of Amendment 3.

The separate announcements by the Florida Sheriffs Association and the Florida Police Chiefs Association come less than a week after polling released by the Vote No on 3 Campaign showed that opposition to Amendment 3 has risen despite its advocates spending over $5 million on television unanswered to bolster it in recent months. The Vote No on 3 Campaign’s data was confirmed by a survey released by the University of North Florida.

Florida Sheriffs Association President and Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummel said:

“The well-being and health of the citizens of Florida are threatened through the legalization and normalization of recreational marijuana. Our priority is the safety and security of our communities, and the data clearly shows that legalization leads to increased public health issues, road safety concerns, and a rise in youth marijuana use. We must take a stand to protect our citizens, especially our youth, from the negative impacts of marijuana.”

Florida Police Chiefs Association President Chief Charles Vazquez said:

“The Florida Police Chiefs Association (FPCA) is composed of over 1,300 of Florida’s top law enforcement executives serving municipal police, airport, railroad and port authority police, college and university police, tribal police, and private business and security firms, as well as federal, state and county law enforcement agencies.”

“As we represent the highest levels of law enforcement leadership in Florida, we believe that passage of Constitutional Amendment 3 “Adult Use of Marijuana” – otherwise known as recreational marijuana – will hurt public safety and ultimately cost Floridians tax dollars and lives. Among these impacts will be the growth of illegal markets and criminal cartels, impaired driving and traffic fatalities, homelessness, and hospitalization as a result of marijuana use.”

ABOUT

The Vote No on 3 Campaign is running a vigorous and full-throated campaign to warn Floridians about this deceptive amendment seeking to make Florida the California of the east – a notion anathema to most Floridians. The campaign will highlight how Amendment 3 will cause the black market to explode; make pot more prevalent and more readily accessible for our children; has no time, place, or manner restrictions; and does not provide a plan for how the money generated from marijuana sales will be allocated.
